A most astute, accurate and appropriate observation. Mumbai's Hindi filmmakers must explore the repertoire of ragas/folk tunes that are the bedrock of Indian musical tradition both in the Hindustani and the Carnatic schools.
But good music can only be had through good lyrics. Good lyrics require a mastery of one's own language. And Indic languages are suffering because of neglect by the mainstream media. A culture that ignores its own idiom loses touch with the art of expressing emotions.

Very true, however I feel all is not lost yet. Some music directors are trying their best to bring in folk, sufi songs, classical singers and raga based songs in the film industry. With all the talent hunts, every year we discover great singers both in children and adults. We have dumped the likes of Kumar Sanu's and other mediocre singers for good.
Although it's nothing compared to the dedication and the quality of the old songs, I think there is still hope.
