I think that Steve Vai started playing with Frank in 78 or 79. I saw him playing with Frank in Dec. 1980 at Louisville Gardens. Eddie Van Halen was hot then and me and my guitar buddies had never heard of Steve Vai before. Vai blew us away!!!!! We were standing there with our mouths hanging open. Afterwards we were all like, "Eddie Van who??" It was great and of course Frank kicked ass on the guitar too!!

Love this song but I always get a little freaked out by the saliva-snapping sound from Frank's blessed vocal instrument. Certainly more so in those days when I indulged in recreational pharmaceuticals.

Well, I like Van Halen but they were commercial. Steve Vai and Zappa were much better on guitar. Even Joe Satriani was better than Eddy in my opinion. Zappa taught Steve Vai. Only true fans of rock guitar probably know this. I do agree with your comment though. RIP Zappa.

His comprehension of music (theoretical, intellectual, melodic, structual,et finitum) could fill a reasonable, legitimate textbook. And yet, his live performance (with the finest musicians the world could provide, in a constant state of flux [until "The Best Band You never heard In Your Life"}truly rocked on all levels. Pardon my going on about this, please. But, Frank Zappa forever altered the way people play contemporary music (especially electric guitar) as have very few others ... like Thelonious Monk effected piano. What I mean is, MUSIC, THE ART FORM AS A WHOLE, was CHANGED by his contribution (an unbelievable volume of work). That's a very rare and wonderful thing to witness. I feel truly priviledged to have lived in his lifetime. Dig a little deeper at the well and check it out.
