The new system unfortunately encourages only level 4 elements. Nevertheless it's a more objective system, taking into account each component, rather than simply the overall impression. Now judges have less authority, since the bar is set by the technical specialist. But if she is not from a "friendly" country, you get low component score anyway. I just hope Albena and Max stay another year so they get closer to the legend status of many former champions.

All three of the teams you mentioned had a knack for flailing their limbs around so much it made their elements look much more technically difficult than they were. You can argue about presentation, but take a closer look at this program - all level 4 elements. And I don't believe for a second Grishuk & Platov would have done twizzles this well.

It is definitely debatable. G/P's tango was very good, but they spent almost the entire first minute in hand-to-hand position and their lifts weren't as difficult either. Perhaps their choreography was more fluid, but only by a small margin in my opinion. Both good dances, but from different contexts.

It wasn't easier than the tangos back then, but I think it's less of a dance now. Back then, the ice dancers can step off the ice and into a ballroom and you couldn't tell the difference--that's the purpose of dance--to DANCE. nowadays, dance seems like trickless pairs. yes, it's more athletic, but is it a dance?
